Dear Therapist, I Regret Sharing That With You

I remember being so young, needing counseling, seeking it, but being overcome by fear to take that step into healing. My reasons? Lack of trust in another human being, and being afraid of betraying family and those close to me if I discussed the secrets I held in my heart.

Everyone who was available to help me felt like a member of a “system”—a covert structure seemingly set up to overwhelm me further. While these thoughts were extreme, this is a small example of what is wrapped in a person who has been through abuse of various sorts. Many clients experience the same fears and doubts before they even make the first appointment. If they do take that step, they are often overcome by anxiety and fear about what to expect in their first session.

Having experienced this fear firsthand, I am aware that every client needs to know they will be met with compassion. I will never pretend to know exactly what they went through, but by sharing small pieces of my own healing journey, I connect with them. I am no longer just a professional sitting across from them, but another human being who has navigated healing and seeks to guide others toward their own growth.

The most profound healing I participate in is with clients who have severe traumatic histories of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. I have witnessed people’s torment become their testimony, and their secrets become their strength by sharing what they have overcome.

For clients who prefer secular-only sessions, I focus on evidence-based counseling methods and strategies that foster emotional healing and resilience. Faith-based counseling is available upon request, for those who wish to integrate it into their sessions.

Since 2009, I have had the pleasure of walking clients—both faith-based and non-religious—through healing that supports their best life. I offer sessions in English and fluent Spanish. I hold a Master’s in Professional Counseling (2017), and have been providing counseling and guidance for over 16 years. I am currently an LPC-Associate under the supervision of Paul Martinez (Texas License #67616), and I look forward to helping many more clients.
